Woodland Products

Here at Ruperra we have 150 acres of recovering woodland that we are trying to manage in a sustainable way.  This involves resurrecting some traditional woodland techniques such as coppicing, where new growth of hazel is cut down every 5-7 years to just above ground level.  This has several advantages: apart from providing a sustainable supply of poles which can be used for all sorts of jobs, it also provides for more diverse habitats in the woodland and particularly allows in more light, which benefits the ground flora such as bluebells and wood anenomes.  We use a lot of coppiced hazel poles around the woodland but we also sell them to the public.  They are great for bean poles and plant supports.  Thicker stems can be used to support newly planted trees while the thinner, branched tops make great pea-sticks.  Climbing plants such as runner beans do better with the slightly rougher bark of hazel than they do with smooth bamboo canes, as they can get a better grip on the stem.  So stick with tradition, save on air-miles and buy your beanpoles from Ruperra rather than bamboo from China!

Each spring we hold a weekend event at the woodland when we sell bean poles, pea-sticks, stakes and other woodland products.  This is advertised on our Events page.  However, to purchase some, you can also contact us using the email or telephone number below.

Woodland products are on sale every spring in the Ruperra car park.
